The specter of an impending power crisis is one of the major threats to the country’s economic development, and is the subject of much speculation and debate in various business fora as well as in mass media.
To shed light on the issues, the Philippine Economic Society (PES) hosted a forum on “The Power Outlook.”
Is there an impending power crisis?
- Under the EPIRA, the government is no longer supposed to put up power plants.
- Private sector power generation companies are expected to supply new generation capacity.
- However, there is a perception that generation sector players are reluctant to commit to new investments.
- What are some of the perceived barriers to putting up additional capacity?
- What is the actual supply and demand balance in the power sector?
- What are some of the key issues on electricity pricing?
- Is the country facing another impending power crisis in the short or medium term?
